About Bomb Sight Project
Bomb Sight is a digital heritage project that helps people explore London during the Second World War Blitz. Through an interactive web map and mobile app, it presents bomb census records covering 7 October 1940 to 6 June 1941—historical maps that were previously accessible only in the Reading Room of The National Archives. Users can search for a street or postcode, navigate the map, adjust its detail, and select bomb markers to view available information.
The map highlights bomb locations and offers views of the first 24 hours of the Blitz and the week beginning 7 October 1940. It also brings together images from Imperial War Museums collections, memories from the BBC’s WW2 archive, and information about defences built to prevent a German invasion. Map layers distinguish bomb types, including high explosive, incendiary and parachute mines, as well as anti-invasion sites and related defences.
