The Big Omaha Maritime Historical Trust is a heritage organisation focused on preserving and sharing the maritime history of Big Omaha and its surrounding communities in New Zealand. Its website brings together historical material on the region’s shipbuilders, sailors, families, vessels and coastal industries, with particular attention to the development of New Zealand scows and the Meiklejohn family’s shipbuilding legacy.
Visitors can explore photographs, family histories, personal stories, poems, letters, obituaries, articles and records of reunions. The site also documents ships built at Omaha, coastal scows and their trades, shipbuilding in Prince Edward Island, days of sail, scow racing and the historic northern coal trade. A gallery offers images of local places, shipyards, people and maritime life, while news and newsletters share updates from the Trust.
The organisation also provides access to material from the DVD The Origins of the New Zealand Scow through a linked YouTube playlist, along with bibliographies, references and information about its heritage projects and past donations.
