About American Bookbinders Museum
The American Bookbinders Museum is a San Francisco museum dedicated to celebrating and sharing the history, tools, and techniques of bookbinding. Described as the only museum of its kind in North America, it explores how books have been made, from 17th-century hand-binding practices to the machines that transformed the craft during the 19th century. Its collection includes historical tools and equipment, such as book-sewing machines, presses, a guillotine, and a roller-backing machine, alongside exhibits about book arts and the development of book production.
Visitors can explore through self-guided, audio, docent-led, and group tours, with school programs, Girl Scout activities, hands-on experiences, lectures, workshops, and rotating special exhibitions also available. The museum provides online exhibits, recorded webinars, and collection resources for those interested in learning remotely. Located in San Francisco’s SoMa/Yerba Buena district, it also offers its space for private events and features a gift shop. The museum welcomes public support through donations, memberships, and volunteering, helping sustain its work of preserving and sharing bookbinding history.
