Borderlands Horse Sanctuary

Borderlands Horse Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2016 and based in Humboldt, South Dakota. Its mission is to provide a permanent retirement home where senior horses can enjoy their later years with care and dignity. The sanctuary accepts horses aged 20 and older who do not have major medical issues requiring immediate veterinary care. Residents receive daily health and quality-of-life evaluations and, when weather permits, 24-hour turnout.

The organization is funded entirely through donations and operated by volunteers. Supporters can contribute through donations, sponsor a horse, or volunteer. Borderlands also offers ways to connect with its horses and their stories, including a PenPal program conducted by email or mail, educational and outreach activities, meet-and-greet events, and tours by appointment. Visitors can learn about current residents and remember horses who previously lived at the sanctuary. As the organization grows, it plans to expand its programs and welcomes volunteers to help. Through its care and community activities, Borderlands shares the experience and wisdom of senior horses.
