Bourbon & Branch is a San Francisco speakeasy at 501 Jones Street, offering guests an experience inspired by the Prohibition era. The bar operated illegally at this location from 1921 to 1933, first appearing in the telephone directory as The Ipswitch – A Beverage Parlor. In 1923, John J. Russell took over and ran it as JJ Russell’s Cigar Shop, using the shop as a cover for serving drinks. The site’s history as a bar dates back to 1867.
Today, Bourbon & Branch recreates the atmosphere of a hidden, password-required drinking spot, with house rules designed to preserve the speakeasy experience. Its menu features craft cocktails organized into five categories: Lighter Fare, Spirit Driven, Free Range, Ice Breakers, and Fresh and Fancy. The bar selects spirits for their quality and prepares many mixers and cocktail ingredients in-house, while offering individually bottled tonic and soda. Guests can also explore the Beverage Academy’s hands-on cocktail classes. Bourbon & Branch welcomes reservations and operates evenings, with later hours from Thursday through Saturday.
