The BRANCH Research Project is a collaborative, community-led initiative focused on creating better research experiences for Indigenous Peoples. Its name—Braiding Research, Accountability, Knowledge, Community and Healing—reflects its commitment to research that puts people first. The project addresses gaps in how research is conducted within communities and aims to help researchers create safer, more respectful experiences for participants, including Indigenous and 2S LGBTQQIA+ people.
BRANCH promotes Trauma and Violence Informed Care (TVIC) and Cultural Safety practices in research. These approaches recognize that people may have experienced trauma or violence and emphasize providing support so participants can feel safe, respected and understood. The project shares information about its goals, overview and phases, and offers ways for people to learn more, follow progress updates and participate.
Committed to OCAP principles and reciprocity, BRANCH also invites communities to share their ethical protocols and guidance on how the project can give back. Through its resources, outreach and opportunities to get involved, the project works toward more ethical, community-responsive research practices.
