About Briarwood Falls
Briarwood Falls Conservation Trust, established in 1962 by a coalition of five families, is dedicated to preserving a unique ecological area encompassing 1,412 acres of the Briarwood sub-basin. Governed by a stringent private covenant, the Trust ensures the land remains untouched by development, emphasizing stewardship over public access. The Trust's prominent feature, the three-stage Briarwood falls, cascades through a basalt formation, creating a serene cataract pool that has never hosted vessels since 1968.
Managed by a board of seven trustees and supported by a resident warden and graduate assistants, the Trust maintains rigorous management and research practices through a biennial compact with visiting scientists. The Trust's scholarly contributions are documented in its Quarterly Review, published since 1971, aimed at members and researchers rather than the general public. With a commitment to conservation that is both principled and enduring, Briarwood Falls Conservation Trust plays a pivotal role in ecological preservation, ensuring that future generations will inherit this unspoiled natural sanctuary.
