Brighton General Cemetery, located in Melbourne, Victoria, is a Victorian garden cemetery of notable historical significance, founded in 1853. It was established to accommodate the growing population south of the Yarra River and spans 29 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. The cemetery saw its first recorded interment in October 1855 and experienced financial challenges in its early years. However, after the closure of St Kilda Cemetery and the opening of Springvale Necropolis in the early 1900s, Brighton General Cemetery entered a prosperous phase, with an average of 1,350 burials annually during the 1920s.
The cemetery is home to the monuments of many prominent Melburnians, including politicians, artists, and authors, such as Sir John Monash and Frederick McCubbin. Brighton General Cemetery also offers a research request service to assist visitors in locating individuals interred within its grounds. The introduction of non-denominational lawn sections in 1958 added to its appeal, reflecting its commitment to maintaining a serene and respectful environment for remembrance and reflection.
