About BAS
The British Arachnological Society (BAS) is a registered charity supporting the study, recording, conservation and public understanding of spiders and other arachnids. Bringing together arachnologists and enthusiasts, the Society shares expertise and encourages members to explore British arachnid life through research, fieldwork and learning. Its resources include the BAS Newsletter, published three times a year, other current and past publications, library collections, videos, factsheets and leaflets.
The Society also provides identification guidance, checklists, frequently asked questions and information about difficult-to-identify species. Through its Spider Recording Scheme and online iRecord form, people can submit records of UK spiders, harvestmen and pseudoscorpions, including photographs to support verification. Members can access additional website resources and apply for grants supporting research, surveys, courses and conferences.
The Stanley Dobson Award offers further small-grant support for amateur arachnologists developing their knowledge or field studies. The BAS also promotes engagement through events, educational materials and public information, helping connect people with arachnology and contribute to understanding and conserving these fascinating animals
