Brockenlauf

Brockenlaufverein 1927 Ilsenburg e.V. organizes the Brockenlauf, described as Germany’s oldest mountain race, with a tradition dating back to its first event on 12 June 1927. Based in Ilsenburg, the association welcomes runners of all ages and says participation is open regardless of membership in an athletics club. Club members may also be included in team rankings.

The Brockenlauf takes participants through the Harz’s natural landscape, including woodland undergoing a transition from spruce monoculture to mixed forest. The association also organizes the Osterlauf, offering runners another event to take part in during the year. Its website provides practical information on race routes, dates, registration and results, alongside frequently asked questions and event news.

Participants and supporters can find downloadable race photographs, learn about the association’s history and activities, and discover ways to support the event through sponsorship. The Brockenlauf is made possible by volunteer helpers, whom the association recognizes for their contributions. Together, its races combine athletic challenge, regional nature and a long-running sporting tradition.
