About The Bronx County Historical Society
The Bronx County Historical Society (BCHS) is a non-profit educational and cultural institution dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of The Bronx and lower Westchester County. Established in 1955, BCHS collects, preserves, and documents the history of the region from its earliest human habitation by indigenous peoples to the present day. They disseminate this information to schools, students, historians, and the general public, promoting pride in The Bronx and its place in the history and development of the region and the nation.
BCHS operates two national landmark historic house museums, the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage and the Museum of Bronx History at the Valentine-Varian House. Along with its Research Center and Research Library, BCHS utilizes its collections for exhibits, historical research, oral history projects, publications, and educational programming. The society's activities anchor dynamic communities and inspire a sense of heritage in The Bronx.
With major attractions like the Poe Cottage and the Museum of Bronx History, BCHS serves as the historical agency for The Bronx, committed to preserving the legacy of the borough
