Broodfonds

Broodfonds is a Dutch initiative that helps self-employed people support one another when illness interrupts their income. Its approach is based on trust and mutual solidarity: members join a local group and provide financial support to a member who becomes unable to work. Rather than presenting itself as a conventional insurance policy, Broodfonds offers a community-based safety net and an alternative way for entrepreneurs to arrange support during sickness.

The organisation’s website explains how the system works, outlines participation requirements, contribution levels and costs, and guides prospective members through the steps to join. It also lists groups across the Netherlands, helping independent professionals find one nearby, and promotes online and local information meetings for people interested in learning more or establishing a group. Personal stories, frequently asked questions, news and media coverage provide additional insight into members’ experiences and the broader role of Broodfonds. Through this combination of practical guidance, group connections and shared financial support, Broodfonds enables self-employed people to build a collective response to income loss caused by illness.
