About Brown v Board
Brown Foundation, located in Mission, KS, is an established organization dedicated to commemorating and promoting the significance of Brown v. Board of Education. Since its founding in October 1988, the foundation has served as a platform for public discourse on the ongoing impact of the landmark case.
Initially focused on awarding scholarships to minority students pursuing degrees in teacher education, the foundation has since expanded its programmatic activities. These include academic research on equal educational opportunity, national education conferences addressing the contemporary impact of the Brown decision, and recognition of civil rights movement participants. One of the foundation's notable achievements was the establishment of the Brown v.
Board of Education National Historic Site. After extensive planning and renovation, the former Monroe Elementary School, one of the segregated schools for African American children, opened to visitors on the 50th anniversary of the Brown decision in 2004. The site offers interpretive exhibits that educate and inspire generations to come.
The Brown Foundation has also achieved successes through various initiatives, including the publication of the Brown Quarterly, the preservation of an oral history collection, the development of educational resources on African American history, and the creation of traveling exhibits on Brown v. Board of Education. Additionally, the foundation partners with Washburn University for the Oliver L.
Brown Distinguished Visiting Scholar program and supports youth-based diversity programs through mini-grants. To sustain its mission, the Brown Foundation relies on support from individuals, businesses, and foundations. Donations contribute to investment in children and youth, programs that educate the public, and the advancement of civic engagement
