About Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences
Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP) is an Indian research institute in Lucknow dedicated to palaeobotany, palaeobiology and Earth sciences. Founded by Professor Birbal Sahni, the institute advances understanding of plant fossils, past environments and Earth’s history through research, publications and specialist facilities. Its work spans topics including ancient vegetation, climate change, palaeoecology, sedimentology and the study of fossil pollen and other microfossils.
BSIP conducts in-house and sponsored research projects and shares findings through research papers, the Journal of Palaeosciences, reports, catalogues and newsletters. It supports the next generation of researchers with Ph.D. opportunities, master’s dissertation programs, training, internships and fellowships. The institute also offers access to facilities and sophisticated analytical instruments, including TL/OSL, XRD, nutrient analysis and FESEM. Its public-facing activities include a museum, outreach programs, lectures, events and the Centre for Geo-heritage and Geo-tourism Promotion. Through research, education and engagement, BSIP contributes to the study and communication of palaeoscience in India and internationally.
