BSJ, also known as the Bureau of Standards Jamaica, is a statutory body established under The Standards Act of 1969. Originally, their main objective was to promote and encourage standardization in relation to commodities, processes, and practices. However, over the years, their role has expanded to include additional services such as conformity assessment (certification, inspection and testing, calibration), and metrology.

BSJ offers a range of products and services to meet industry requirements. They develop standards and other requirements that commodities, services, practices, and processes must adhere to. They conduct tests, calibrate instruments, and certify products and management systems.

Additionally, BSJ provides industrial training, promotes research, and facilitates education in standardization. To ensure compliance with various acts and regulations, BSJ operates under The Trade Act (1955), The Customs Act (1941), The Petroleum (Quality Control) Regulations (1990), and The CARICOM Regional Organization for Standards and Quality Act (2005). As an agency under the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, BSJ is governed by a fourteen-member Standards Council.
