About Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation
Welcome to the website of the Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation (BSU), a federal agency operating under the Ministry of Digital and Transportation (BMDV). Our primary objective is to investigate and analyze all types of maritime accidents involving ships under the German flag, both within German territorial waters and, in certain cases, within the exclusive economic zone (AWZ). Our investigations are conducted independently of the flag state to ensure impartiality.
The BSU focuses exclusively on determining the circumstances, causes, and contributing factors of accidents in order to protect lives and prevent future incidents. We do not engage in assigning blame, liability, or claims. Our services include the collection and analysis of data, the publication of investigation reports, and the provision of safety recommendations and lessons learned.
In addition, we provide various resources such as forms for accident reporting and compensation claims, as well as information on the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR).
