About BTNEP
BTNEP, or the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program, is dedicated to preserving one of the world's most diverse and fertile environments. The Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary, located between the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers, encompasses a vast array of habitats, including levees, forests, swamps, marshes, islands, bays, and bayous. These estuaries provide essential nourishment and shelter to millions of migrating ducks and geese, as well as support a thriving commercial fish and shellfish industry.
Since the 1990s, BTNEP's Management Conference has brought together representatives from various sectors, including industry, government agencies, landowners, environmentalists, and more, to collaboratively protect and preserve the fragile resources of the Barataria and Terrebonne Basins. They address critical issues such as habitat loss, changes in living resources, water quality, as well as economics, culture, and education. By working together, BTNEP aims to save this disappearing estuary and its valuable flood-protection system, ensuring a sustainable future for the region's communities and ecosystems.
