About Building Thinking Classrooms
Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) is an innovative educational approach pioneered by Dr. Peter Liljedahl from Simon Fraser University, aimed at transforming the way mathematics is taught in classrooms around the globe. At its core, BTC focuses on enhancing student engagement and deep thinking through collaborative activities and dynamic learning environments. The methodology features 14 specific teaching practices designed to break traditional norms, fostering a culture of critical thinking among students.
BTC emphasizes engaging tasks that transition from non-curricular to curriculum-based challenges, promoting long-term thinking. By utilizing randomly formed groups, students are encouraged to actively contribute and collaborate, breaking down social barriers and enhancing overall enthusiasm for mathematics. The approach also advocates for vertical non-permanent surfaces (VNPS) for student work, facilitating risk-taking and sustained engagement.
First introduced in the book "Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics," BTC has become a global phenomenon, influencing educators from North America to Asia, leading to a more interactive and effective learning experience in mathematics education.
