Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur

The Federal Foundation for the Study of the Communist Dictatorship in Germany (Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur) promotes public engagement with the history and consequences of the East German dictatorship and communist rule. Its work connects historical research, education, remembrance, and support for people affected by political persecution in the German Democratic Republic (GDR).

The foundation funds projects, publications, events, and educational initiatives, and offers grant programmes and an online application portal. Its resources include a library, archive, media library, research catalogues, databases, dossiers, and dedicated web portals. It also develops exhibitions, documentaries, teaching materials, and digital projects, and organizes conferences, training, study visits, and international exchanges. These services support schools, researchers, museums, memorial sites, partner organizations, and the wider public.

Through news, talks, and educational resources, the foundation explores topics including everyday life in the GDR, opposition, communist history, and the transition of 1989–90. It also advocates for victims and survivors by supporting associations and raising public awareness of their concerns.
