About Buxton Festival
Buxton International Festival is a renowned arts festival that has been captivating audiences for over 40 years. Recognized both nationally and internationally, this festival showcases the finest opera, music, and literature amidst the stunning backdrop of the Peak District. The festival's history is steeped in charm and grandeur, with its roots tracing back to the town's beautiful opera house, designed by the esteemed architect Frank Matcham.
Despite facing challenging times post-war, this venue was lovingly restored in 1980 and remains a true gem of Edwardian architecture. BIF is known for its commitment to rarely performed operas, attracting esteemed singers, musicians, and literary speakers from around the world. It has also expanded to include a major concert series, a literary element, and outreach work.
The festival continues to grow and innovate, even celebrating its 40th anniversary with a critically acclaimed opera depicting the story of the vibrant 5th Duchess of Devonshire. Buxton International Festival is more than just a summer celebration. Throughout the year, it provides opportunities for young musicians, supports rising stars in the North of England, and even delivers Art Council Awards in local primary schools.
With its exceptional programming and rich history, BIF truly offers a unique and unmissable experience for opera, music, and literary enthusiasts alike
