Buxton Well Dressing is a registered charity that organises an annual celebration of the traditional art of well dressing in Buxton, Derbyshire, within the Peak District. Held during the first two weeks of July, the festival and accompanying carnival bring the community together to honour a custom that began in 1840, when local residents marked the arrival of fresh water at the Market Place fountain with a floral display, music and dancing. Today, the volunteer-led organisation prepares the well dressings and coordinates festival activities, including the carnival parade.
It works closely with the council but manages the event itself, relying on volunteers throughout the year and especially during festival week. Visitors can explore event dates, a diary of activities, photographs and the history of the tradition through the organisation’s website. The charity also offers a book about Buxton well dressing, illustrated with more than 90 photographs and based on Anne Gould’s archive; proceeds support the festival.
