The Büchereiverband Österreichs (BVÖ), or Austrian Library Association, is the umbrella organization for Austria’s libraries. It supports the country’s public library sector with services, advice and information on key aspects of library work, and provides resources for libraries, librarians and their governing organizations.

The BVÖ offers professional development through training courses, regional and online workshops, and e-learning. Its guidance and information cover topics including library management, legal questions, accessibility, public relations, literature promotion and digital services. Libraries can also find details of funding opportunities, including support for media collections, events, projects and mobility, alongside advisory services and practical tools such as library statistics, performance standards and a classification system.

The association promotes reading and library life through initiatives such as Österreich liest. Treffpunkt Bibliothek, as well as awards, publications, newsletters and other information services. It connects libraries and library professionals across Austria, shares news and event information, and supports professional exchange through conferences and partnerships. The BVÖ’s work is focused on strengthening libraries and encouraging reading throughout the country.
