Its OpenStack-based Infrastructure-as-a-Service platform lets users provision virtual machines with computing, memory, storage, and network resources, often within minutes. Resources can be scaled dynamically, and users can choose from different hardware and software configurations to get started without complex processes.

Designed for varied academic needs, bwCloud-OS supports activities ranging from classroom instruction and testing to research projects and operational workloads. The service connects infrastructure sites and partner universities across the state, including the University of Freiburg, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the University of Mannheim, and Ulm University.

Access is provided through federated identity management using bwIDM, enabling secure, straightforward registration and sign-in for members of participating universities. The platform emphasizes open-source technologies and aims to strengthen digital independence while avoiding dependence on licensing obligations and the costs of large external providers. bwCloud-OS offers a shared infrastructure for Baden-Württemberg’s academic community.
