The C8 Science Panel was an independent research panel formed to investigate potential health effects associated with exposure to PFOA, also known as C8, in communities in the Mid-Ohio Valley. From 2005 to 2013, the panel studied exposure and health outcomes linked to releases from the Washington Works plant in Parkersburg, West Virginia, dating back to the 1950s. Its three epidemiologists—Tony Fletcher, David Savitz, and Kyle Steenland—were jointly selected by parties to a legal settlement concerning the releases.
The panel has completed its work and no longer exists. Its website serves as an archive of the research programme and its findings, offering Probable Link reports, study publications, information about panel members, a health project newsletter archive, and links to related resources. The reports summarize whether the panel found evidence of a link between C8 exposure and particular diseases, while scientific journal articles provide detailed research. The panel concluded that a Probable Link existed for six conditions: diagnosed high cholesterol, ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, testicular cancer, kidney cancer, and pregnancy-induced hypertension.
