New Zealand Cadet Forces (NZCF) is a long-running youth organisation that helps prepare young people for leadership and life beyond school. A non-profit serving New Zealand youth, it has operated continually since 1864 and, in its current form, has partnered with the New Zealand Defence Force and locally appointed community organisations since 1971. NZCF is open to young people aged 13 to 19 and brings together three branches: Navy Cadets, Army Cadets and Air Cadets.
Its nationally coordinated programme combines military-style leadership development, personal growth and adventure-based training. Cadets take part in practical activities and challenges, with opportunities to explore the outdoors, get on the water or take to the skies. Training develops skills such as teamwork, communication, navigation, first aid, responsibility and decision-making, while building confidence and resilience. Local, regional and national courses offer further challenges and access to recognised qualifications. Led by volunteers and supported by the New Zealand Defence Force, NZCF provides hands-on experiences, camps and opportunities to form lasting friendships while helping young people grow into capable leaders.
