California Birth Index is a free online search service for California birth records registered from 1905 to 1995. The site makes the state’s official birth index searchable without an account or subscription, helping visitors explore family history and verify details about relatives. Search results can include a person’s full name, date of birth, county of birth, sex, mother’s maiden name, and father’s last name.

The index is a name catalog, not a collection of birth certificates, and does not provide street addresses, birth times, or specific birth cities. Users can search by name and try spelling variations or parental details when a record is difficult to find. Record pages may also suggest possible siblings by comparing parents’ names across nearby birth years; these connections are prompts for further research, not confirmed relationships.

Where a likely match exists in the California Death Index, the site links to it for additional genealogical context
