El Colegio de Abogados de La Libertad es una persona jurídica de Derecho Público Interno, constituida por una asociación obligatoria impuesta por la ley 1367 (20-12- 1910), la que institucionaliza oficialmente al Colegio de Abogados de Lima y a todos los Colegios de Abogados establecidos en el Perú. Los abogados que omitan inscribirse “carecen de título legal para ejercer la abogacía”. Fue creado el 3 de Junio de 1923, en Asamblea General a la que fueron convocados todos los abogados de la ciudad, y en la que fue elegida la Junta Directiva, con su primer Decano, el Dr. Eleazar Boloña. El distintivo profesional de los miembros de la Orden, lo constituye una Estrella de oro, que tiene siete ángulos salientes y una corona cívica en el centro, dentro de la cual en tres líneas en latín, se lee: “ORABUNT CAUSAS MELIUS”, que significa “DEFENDERÁN LAS CAUSAS CON HONOR”. Las siete puntas de la medalla simbolizan los siete dones que nos concede el Espíritu Santo: sabiduría, ciencia, inteligencia, piedad, consejo, fortaleza y temor a Dios.
