Cal Smith Framing

Cal Smith Framing is an independent conservation-framing studio based in Wivenhoe, Essex, led by specialist framer Cal Smith. With 20 years of experience as a maker and designer, Cal provides museum-grade conservation framing for private collectors, galleries and museums. The studio undertakes custom artwork projects and can arrange regular collections from London, making its services accessible to clients beyond Essex.

Cal also offers practical framing courses in the Wivenhoe studio, tailored to individual needs. Students learn to mount artworks and build attractive, conservation-grade frames for a work of art they choose, using both hand tools and professional framing equipment.

Alongside framing and teaching, Cal Smith Gallery curates modern art and design, with a particular focus on Modernism and Brutalism, including work by Emigré and Outsider Artists. The collection features artists such as Ron Hitchins, Lothar Klute, Peter László Péri and Siegfried Charoux. Works are exhibited at the Decorative Fair in Battersea Park or can be viewed by appointment at the Wivenhoe studio.
