About Campo Arqueológico de Mértola
The Campo Arqueológico de Mértola (CAM) is an archaeological and heritage organization based in Mértola, in Portugal’s Alentejo region. Its work explores the area’s history and connections with the Mediterranean, including Roman, Islamic and medieval periods. CAM brings together archaeological research, fieldwork, education and public engagement, helping make local heritage accessible to researchers, residents and visitors.
Its activities include excavations, research projects, training, internships, volunteer opportunities and educational programs. The organization also hosts courses, workshops, conferences, exhibitions and other cultural events. Visitors can explore archaeological tourism initiatives and themed routes, including projects focused on religious heritage and the landscapes of the Guadiana region.
CAM supports research through specialist work areas, a scientific repository and a library with a bibliographic catalogue and user services. It also publishes books, exhibition catalogues, studies and the journal Arqueologia Medieval. The organization highlights objects from Mértola’s past, from ceramics and lamps to inscriptions, sculpture and jewellery, connecting material discoveries with the diverse communities that shaped the region.
