Canterbury Whitewater Club is a Christchurch-based community for people who enjoy exploring rivers by kayak, raft, and other whitewater craft. One of New Zealand’s largest whitewater clubs, it has about 250 members and paddles on South Island rivers most weekends from September through June. Trips range from grade 2 to grade 4, giving paddlers opportunities to experience a variety of river conditions and develop their skills.
Each spring, the club runs two comprehensive beginner courses to help newcomers build confidence and become capable paddlers. Its activities and resources also include rafting, rolling practice, and gear hire. Founded around 1980 as the Whitewater Canoe Club, the organisation later adopted its current name to reflect its support for a wider range of river craft.
Canterbury Whitewater Club is a member of Whitewater New Zealand and advocates for river access, river conservation, and wilderness conservation. As a registered incorporated society, it is governed by a constitution and managed by a committee elected annually
