**Cantus: A Comprehensive Database for Latin Ecclesiastical Chant**
Cantus serves as a vital repository for Latin ecclesiastical chants, encompassing a wide array of manuscripts and early printed works primarily from medieval Europe. This searchable digital archive features detailed inventories of key sources such as antiphoners, breviaries, and graduals, which are foundational to the music performed during the Latin liturgical Office and Mass. The project is continually evolving, incorporating new chant melodies into existing records and expanding its indexing to include diverse chant manuscripts like processionals and pontificals.
Cantus is part of the Cantus Index network, facilitating access to an extensive collection of chant texts and melodies. The database is accessible free of charge, aligning with the goals of the International Musicological Society’s Study Group Cantus Planus, promoting open data exchange. Funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Cantus aims to foster research excellence through inclusivity and diversity in the field of musicology.
