About Spaw-Rac
Welcome to the website of CAR-SPAW-RAC, the Regional Activity Center for the Protocol Concerning Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife in the Caribbean Region. Our mission is to promote regional cooperation for the protection and development of the Caribbean region. We focus on four main areas: species, ecosystems, spaces, and the Sargasso Sea.
CAR-SPAW-RAC plays a crucial role in protecting the diverse species of flora and fauna in the Caribbean. The protected species listed under SPAW are classified into three annexes. We also emphasize the importance of protecting and sustainably managing coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrasses to enhance the coastal resilience of the Caribbean region.
We prioritize the inclusion of protected areas within the SPAW Protocol, as stated in Article 7, as it is essential for stakeholders. As for the numbers, there are currently 36 listed SPAW sites, and the SPAW Protocol has been ratified by various countries.
