About Cardiovascular Business
The future of patient care for tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is looking promising, thanks to new data presented at ESC Congress 2023. Tricuspid valve interventions have gained attention, with new transcatheter devices emerging as potential treatments. Data shows that intervening to reduce TR not only improves patients' quality of life but also reduces hospitalizations and benefits kidney and liver function.
One significant study, TRI-SCORE, evaluated a tricuspid risk scoring system and compared tricuspid valve surgery with transcatheter tricuspid valve repair using TEER. The study found that patients with lower scores had better outcomes in both surgical and transcatheter arms. Techniques in tricuspid surgical repair and replacement have improved, with outcomes in experienced centers surpassing national registries.
However, there is a learning curve associated with using tricuspid devices, and complication rates are decreasing as operators become more experienced. Any reduction in tricuspid regurgitation leads to noticeable symptom improvement, and interventions that achieve at least moderate reduction have positive effects on patients' everyday lives and overall cardiac function. With lower hospital readmission rates and positive outcomes in renal and hepatic functions, tricuspid interventions are proving to be beneficial.
Future studies are needed to explore the ideal timing for interventions and to better understand which patients would benefit the most. Overall, the new data presented at ESC Congress 2023 showcases the potential of these interventions to revolutionize patient care for tricuspid regurgitation
