CARES, LLC is a family history research business based in Annandale, Virginia, serving clients in the Washington, DC, metro area and worldwide. Founded by retired Navy Commander Dale Johnson, the company brings a methodical, evidence-led approach to questions about ancestry, biological relatives, and family records. Its services include customized genealogy research, DNA research guidance, citizenship-by-descent dossiers, and heritage travel planning. Citizenship projects help clients locate certificates, translations, and supporting documents for applications involving Italian, Irish, Polish, German, and other European citizenship. Heritage travel planning can connect documented family history with visits to ancestral villages, churches, and records offices.

CARES grounds its findings in original records, cross-checks ancestors against independent sources, and provides citations so clients can continue the research. Each project concludes with a formal written report covering objectives, sources, findings, and recommendations. The company also operates public research projects, including a registry linking NASA images to the cameras and lenses that captured them, and publishes sourced analysis on defense topics.
