Central Avian Research Institute

The Central Avian Research Institute (CARI) is an Indian poultry research and education institute with roots in a poultry research section established at the Imperial Veterinary Research Institute in 1939. Its work supports the development of India’s poultry sector through scientific research, training, technology development and outreach. CARI’s research spans avian genetics and breeding, nutrition and feed technology, physiology and reproduction, and post-harvest technology. These programmes address genetic improvement and conservation of poultry germplasm, feed quality and nutrition, animal physiology, and the quality, preservation, processing and value addition of eggs and poultry meat.

The institute also provides postgraduate education and training, consultancy and analytical services, including feed analysis and quality assurance. Its activities include supplying poultry germplasm, sharing developed technologies, conducting training programmes, and supporting farmers and entrepreneurs through outreach, publications and events. Facilities include laboratories, a hatchery, a library and a guest house. CARI offers expertise and resources to researchers, students, farmers and businesses seeking knowledge and services related to poultry production and product development.
