Caribana Arts Group is the founding organization of Caribana, the Caribbean festival first presented in Toronto in 1967 by West Indian volunteers as a gift for Canada’s centennial. The organization preserves Caribana’s history, name and cultural meaning, and holds the registered Caribana trademark. Its work connects the festival’s Caribbean roots and founders with the generations who will carry its traditions forward.
The group documents the history of Caribana and carnival, gathers family photographs and personal stories for its community archive, and shares historical features about people and events that shaped the celebration. It also supports cultural learning through programs including the Emancipation Day March and Caribana Kids Club. In preparation for the festival’s 60th anniversary in 2027, Caribana Arts Group is inviting community members to contribute memories and materials to help build the archive. Through its website, the organization also shares news, stories and information about carnival arts, including mas, steelpan and soca, while offering ways to connect, participate and support its work.
