Plants of the Eastern Caribbean is an essential online database created to enhance public knowledge about the diverse flora of the Eastern Caribbean region. Spearheaded by Sean Carrington, a renowned Professor of Plant Biology at the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Barbados, this project began in January 2006 with a grant from UNESCO. At its core, the database features an extensive collection of plant photographs taken in Barbados, Dominica, and the Grenadines, significantly contributed by Kareem Sabir, a UWI Biology graduate.

The project emphasizes accuracy and reliability by creating voucher specimens for every photograph of new plants, with these specimens deposited at both the Barbados Herbarium and the Smithsonian Institution for expert verification. Users are encouraged to submit additional plant images, facilitating community engagement and expanding the database. Through this initiative, the Eastern Caribbean Flora Project not only provides a valuable resource for plant identification but also fosters a deeper understanding of the region's unique botanical heritage.
