About Caricom Reparations
The Caribbean Reparations Commission (CRC) is a significant initiative under the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), dedicated to addressing historical injustices related to Native genocide and slavery in the Caribbean. Formed following discussions initiated at the 34th Conference of Heads of Government in July 2013, the CRC aims to establish a comprehensive moral, ethical, and legal case for reparations from former colonial powers to Caribbean nations.
Chaired by Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, the Commission oversees the work of national reparations committees established in twelve CARICOM member states, including Antigua and Barbuda, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. These committees collaborate to advocate for reparative justice and engage in public dialogue, fostering awareness about the impacts of slavery and colonialism on Caribbean societies.
Through events like the Reparations Movement Relay and various public outreach efforts, the CRC invites community feedback and education on its vital mission of justice and recognition for the Caribbean region's past.
