Carioca

The Clube Excursionista Carioca (CEC) is a Rio de Janeiro mountaineering club founded in 1946, with more than 75 years of activity and a longstanding role in Brazilian climbing. Run by volunteers who share a deep commitment to the mountains, the club welcomes people interested in learning to climb and taking part in outdoor activities. Its program includes rock climbing, hiking, traverses, and expeditions, alongside courses, social events, and opportunities for members to build climbing partnerships.

The CEC teaches climbing with an emphasis on responsibility, technical skills, and established safety practices. Members also contribute to the sport by establishing and renovating climbing routes, helping make them safer for visitors. Environmental care and minimizing impact are central to the club’s approach.

To preserve the history of mountaineering in Rio, the CEC maintains a library and digital archive containing accounts, route sketches, photographs, and documents. Through its courses, activities, resources, and community, the club supports both practical mountain experience and the continued sharing of local climbing knowledge
