Carlisle Mencap is a locally governed, independent charity founded more than 50 years ago by families in Cumbria. Affiliated with Royal Mencap but not funded by it, the organisation supports more than 500 children and adults with learning disabilities and their families. Its work is guided by the belief that everyone should have choice, opportunity and respect, and be able to lead a fulfilling, active and inclusive life.
The charity provides children’s and adult services, including supported living in managed homes, short-break respite care at California House, and activities based at the purpose-built Grace Little Centre. It also offers outreach support in people’s homes and communities. Specialist workers help families and carers with health, wellbeing and advocacy, and connect them with regional resources and referrals through an established network.
Carlisle Mencap shares accessible resources on safety, wellbeing, exercise and independence, including videos created with people with learning disabilities. The charity also invites community involvement through membership, volunteering, vacancies and fundraising, and works with local businesses to support its services.
