About Carnegie Hero Fund
The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission is a renowned organization that recognizes and supports individuals who demonstrate acts of heroism in civilian life in the United States and Canada. Established in 1904 by Andrew Carnegie, the organization's mission has remained unchanged for over a century. Carnegie's vision was to honor the heroes of civilization, individuals who risk their lives to save or protect others.
The Commission awards the prestigious Carnegie Medal to those who voluntarily and exceptionally endanger their own lives for the sake of another person. Recipients of the medal, which has been awarded to over 10,000 individuals to date, become eligible for various financial considerations, including one-time grants, scholarship aid, death benefits, and continuing assistance. Notably, around 20% of the medals are awarded posthumously.
The Commission operates as a private foundation and relies on charitable donations. As a tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code, donations made to the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission are deductible as charitable contributions. Through its unwavering dedication to recognizing and honoring acts of heroism, the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission upholds the legacy of Andrew Carnegie and inspires countless individuals to strive for selflessness and bravery
