Carreiros do Monte is an association preserving and operating Madeira Island’s traditional wicker toboggan rides, a distinctive attraction connecting Monte and Funchal. The custom dates to the 19th century, when local residents used wicker baskets as a fast way to travel between the hillside community and the city. For more than 100 years, the Carreiros—the men who guide the sledges—have shared this experience with visitors to Madeira.

The ride covers approximately two kilometres and offers a lively journey downhill in a wicker sledge, guided by the Carreiros. Sledges accommodate one, two or three people, with prices listed as €30, €40 and €60 respectively. The service operates Monday to Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tickets are sold in person for same-day rides; online reservations are not accepted. Operations may end early because of queues or adverse weather, and rides for three people are unavailable when it rains or the ground is wet. The departure point is in Monte, with arrival in Livramento, Funchal.
