Carterton District Historical Society

Carterton District Historical Society is a volunteer-led organisation dedicated to discovering, preserving and sharing the history of Carterton and the wider rural Wairarapa community in New Zealand. Established in 1987, the Society became an incorporated charitable organisation in 2006. Its purpose is to collect and preserve local records and artefacts while fostering community interest in the district’s past.

The Society’s archive includes photographs, regional maps, school rolls, cemetery records, business histories, memorabilia and material about early European settlers and local churches. Volunteers catalogue and care for these collections, which individuals and community groups can view at the Society’s rooms. The organisation also shares local stories through articles, photographs, newsletters, events and planned school visits, helping people learn about Carterton’s families, buildings, businesses, events and community groups.

Activities include a Heritage Trail Walk and participation in local events such as the Daffodil Festival and ANZAC Parade. Members can enjoy newsletters, guest speakers and social gatherings. Visitors are welcome at the rooms on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with appointments also available.
