Le Catacombe di San Callisto sono tra le più grandi e importanti di Roma. Nate intorno alla metà del II secolo d.c., fanno parte di un complesso cimiteriale che occupa un'area di 15 ettari di terreno, con una rete di gallerie lunghe quasi 20 chilometri, su diversi piani, e raggiungono una profondità superiore ai 20 metri. In esse trovarono sepoltura decine di martiri, 16 pontefici e moltissimi cristiani. Nel III secolo le Catacombe di San Callisto divennero il cimitero ufficiale della Chiesa di Roma, composto da diverse aree: la Cripta dei Papi è il luogo più sacro ed importante di queste catacombe, chiamato anche 'il piccolo Vaticano' perché vi furono sepolti 9 papi
