About Cecil Whig
Cecil Whig is one of the nation's oldest newspapers, founded on August 7, 1841 by Palmer C. Ricketts to promote the Whig political party. It is also the oldest newspaper on Maryland's Eastern Shore that still publishes under its original name.
The Whig is dedicated to providing political news, agricultural information, updates within the useful arts, literature, and general intelligence. Initially published weekly in Elkton, Maryland, the newspaper operated out of a log cabin that previously served as campaign headquarters for William Henry Harrison. Notably, the Whig's history is marked by an infamous incident in which its founder shot and killed the editor of its rival newspaper, the Cecil Democrat, in front of the Elkton Post Office in 1843.
Ricketts continued to publish the paper from his jail cell until his trial, where a jury ruled he had acted in self-defense. Since 1989, the Whig has been published daily from Monday to Friday. The physical address of Cecil Whig is 601 N.
