About Centre de recherche
CELAT, the Centre for Research on Cultures, Arts and Societies, is an interdisciplinary research centre dedicated to understanding processes of pluralization in Quebec and beyond. Its work explores how diverse ways of living and understanding the world coexist within a shared reality. Supported as a strategic research grouping by the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture, CELAT brings together researchers from Université Laval, UQAM, UQAC, Université de Montréal and McGill University. Formally established in 1975, it grew from the folklore archives chair created at Université Laval in 1944 and was the university’s first recognized centre in the humanities and social sciences.
Through research programming, academic collaboration and public engagement, CELAT supports projects across cultures, arts and societies. Its activities include conferences, seminars, workshops, exhibitions, screenings, performances and public mediation, alongside publications such as monographs, collective works, dictionaries, journals and research reports. The centre also shares news, resources and opportunities, and connects its members and partners through events and research initiatives.
