About Cell
The Cell Image Library is an online resource for exploring and sharing images, videos, and animations that document the structure and activity of cells. Hosted by the Center for Research in Biological Systems at the University of California, San Diego, it brings together a diverse collection spanning many organisms, cell types, and cellular processes. The library offers more than 12,000 unique datasets, with 30 terabytes of data available for research and education.
Visitors can browse by cell process, component, type, or organism, and explore topics ranging from the Golgi apparatus and mitochondria to the actin cytoskeleton and nucleus. Featured images and curated collections help users discover visual material, while accession numbers and citation guidance support accurate referencing. The library also provides information about licensing and offers an open-source API, alongside links to tools such as Interactive Cells and CDeep3M.
Contributors interested in submitting images can contact the library team. Through this accessible scientific resource, the Cell Image Library supports the study and communication of cell biology
