Celtic Renewables is a Scottish green chemicals company developing alternatives to products made from fossil fuels. Its patented, proven ABE (Acetone-Butanol-Ethanol) fermentation process transforms low-value by-products and waste from industries including food, drink and agriculture into bio-acetone, bio-butanol and bio-ethanol. Feedstocks include materials such as reject potatoes and whisky by-products, giving industrial residues new value while supporting a more circular economy.
The company’s bio-based chemicals serve a range of applications. Bio-acetone is used as a solvent and formulation ingredient in areas such as pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Bio-butanol is a versatile solvent for coatings, cosmetics, personal care and speciality chemicals, while bio-ethanol is used across several industries. Celtic Renewables states that its green chemicals can deliver carbon savings of more than 60% compared with petrochemical alternatives.
Its commercial biorefinery in Grangemouth, Scotland, operates around the clock, producing and shipping chemicals to customers. Celtic Renewables also works with industry partners, including Evonik, and offers career opportunities as it develops its technology and production capacity.
