About Census Maps
Canadian Census Maps is an interactive mapping project created by Calvin Liang to make census data easier to explore by neighbourhood. The site lets users compare information from the 2016 and 2021 Canadian Census of Population, with 2026 data noted as coming in mid-2027. Visitors can select an area, such as a hometown, Census subdivision or postal code, and choose a topic to visualize on the map.
The available topics cover population, including people’s ages and where they live; identity, including how people identify, the languages they speak and where they came from; housing and household types; education and qualifications; and work, employment and earnings. A plain-English question feature can rank neighbourhoods on the map in response to a user’s query.
The maps use Statistics Canada’s 2021 Census of Population boundary and Census Profile files under the Statistics Canada Open License. Inspired by the ONS Census maps, Canadian Census Maps offers an accessible way to explore and compare demographic and social information across Canada, with English and French language options.
