The South East Connecticut Community Center of the Blind is a nonprofit organization serving blind and visually impaired people in southeastern Connecticut. Founded in 1972 and incorporated in 1976, the Center works to meet community members’ social, recreational, educational, referral, and advocacy needs, supporting them in attaining and maintaining independent lifestyles. Its welcoming community offers opportunities to connect, socialize, and support one another through activities such as hikes, dinners, field trips, and craft workshops, alongside a calendar of events and Lunch & Learn programs.
The Center also helps people explore assistive technology. Members can try smart glasses before buying, join assistive technology and smart glasses user groups in person or remotely, and arrange one-on-one technical assistance by appointment. The organization also helps individuals compare smart glasses with other assistive devices and offers informational resources, publications, videos, and podcasts. Volunteers support activities, reading, clerical tasks, and transportation. As a 501(c)(3) organization, the Center relies on private contributions, donations, fundraising, and grants to sustain its work and services.
